The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho

Book title: The Alchemist
Author: Paulo Coelho
Format: PDF, epub, mobi

The Alchemist is written originally in Portuguese and was translated to at least 67 different languages. It is one of the best-selling books in the world.這本使用葡萄牙文寫的書已被翻譯成至少67種不同語言,是歷史上最暢銷的書之一。

This book follows a young shepherd, Santiago, in his journey to Egypt to find his treasure. Santiago encountered love, loss, fear, and danger and learned to understand himself and the ways of the world. He met an alchemist who taught him to listen to his heart and his lover who encouraged him to pursue his destiny. The story is well told and is full with words which inspire people. It is a short story, but will make you want to read it again. I highly recommend this book to everyone, young and old. If you are young it definitely is a book you need to read. If you are not that young, it is a book that makes you wonder why you didn't read this book earlier, but it's not too late. Life begins just now.

You know what? The first book that I bought written by Paulo Coelho was "Eleven Minutes"; I was amazed by the title and wanted to know what the eleven minutes stands for, lol, and it's actually related to sex, lol. Shocking, eh? I personally love reading "The Manual of the Warrior of Light", "Veronika Decides to Die", and "The Devil and Miss Prym". All these are so inspirational and spiritual :) Makes me feel refreshed! Have you read any of these??
Cheers!

“The Alchemist” is my first Paulo Coelho’s book. Thank you for your introduction of Paolo Coelho's works to me in other post. For the youth living in Asia, following their heart to their destiny is difficult if not impossible. They don't have any choice except fitting themselves into the rigid system, or they may not have time to think about their dreams. I am jealous of Santiago's freedom in doing what he wants. His lover encouraged him to realize his dream. His determination led him to his goal. Someone may argue that we make decisions following our heart. Yes, that's true. But Santiago has only himself and his sheep to feed and his promise to his lover to live with, and he got the treasures he can live on. Now where will be his next destiny? After he returned to his lover, I wonder if he will be the same person as he was trying to fulfill his dream. Hopefully his heart won't change its course and his god is still doing magic to turn him to wind. Life can not be judged as a success or a failure. We live our ways. Everyone should have a dream and have courage to pursue it. Successful or not it is a journey. It is life. We freely make decisions and have to take the consequences. It is not necessarily a happy ending, but at least an acceptable one if we do our best. I don't like the ending of “The Alchemist” though it is a little unexpected. A real materialized treasure reduces the value of this book. I prefer that the book should have shown that what are learned in the journey and the maturity of a young person are the treasures Santiago rewarded.

I am in the middle of reading "Veronika Decides to Die". It seems an interesting book. When I finish I may talk about it.

I wonder why no one downloads this book. I guess Paulo Coelho is relatively unknown in Asia. Books such as Harry Potter or Twilight series are popular here thanks to the movies adapted from them.

A very thorough reflection on "The Alchemist" :) I surely believe that the shepherd boy, Santiago , has learnt a great deal in his journey due to his determination and persistence in continuing his journey no matter what kind of obstacles are standing in his way. Remember one very important quote "when you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it."? Santiago took aggressive action and was serious about his dream, so he changed his destiny, not just a shepherd boy who tended sheep on a farmland only. I'm glad you also enjoy Paulo Coelho's novels!
"Veronika Decides to Die" is really stimulating; we all need to be hopeful when all else fails! I can totally understand this feeling since coincidentally, I'm now in a very devastating situation. Though I wanna re-read the book, I still have at least 2 novels I haven't finished reading yet, lol.

For me, I'm not entirely interested in Harry Potter; I haven't read any of the books and I even fell asleep while watching the second movie, so that means it's too boring for my taste, while Twilight novel is full of grammatical errors, said by a friend of mine, lol. So, no thanks.

I know it's disappointing that no one is downloading the book!! I mean it's free and you dun have to look it up in a bookstore!! I myself love to collect books and it makes me feel satisfied while looking at my bookshelf full of books, lol. Unfortunately, you can't force others to read; students never like reading in another language other than their own. I only started to pick up reading when I was in university. I never like reading when I was in elementary and high school, neither in Chinese nor English. I simply detested reading, lol. And the above passage just betrays my age, lol.
Enjoy your book!

Another reason why no one is downloading the book is due to the fact that most netizens who come here don't really have a good command of English and your introductory post full of English scares them away, lol. That's the same with my posts too, hardly anyone replies them, lol. I started a few new topics in this English forum, but the replies are scarce. Guess too many unknown English words have frightened away the poor learners, my bad. =\
I mean you can count how many actually replies in English here, lol....<div class='locked'><em>瀏覽完整內容,請先 <a href='member.php?mod=register'>註冊</a> 或 <a href='javascript:;' onclick="lsSubmit()">登入會員</a></em></div>

The English introduction may scare netizens away, but it is in elementary school level. Poeple who cannot comprehend that may have a hard  time to read this book. According to Accelerated Reader book finder, the book level of this book is 6.4 (6 grade) and interest level is UG (10 to 12 grade). High school students are busy in preparing tests and having fun with friends and won't have time for this book. People like to watch TV, go online or chat with friends using smartphones nowadays. There are not many book readers. If people do read, magazines, newspaper or books which may help pass tests or improve their careers are their first of choice. Netizens who like to read won't come here to find books. An English e-book which doesn't help good grade is fatally unpopular here.
Have a nice day.
